The introduction of information technology into the education system was part of the government's upgrading of technical and vocational education in the mid-1980s. It was implemented mainly on two fronts : first, as new specialisations in the upper secondary technical and vocational schools, and, second, as part of the innovation introduced with the establishment of the new comprehensive upper secondary schools. Information technology in the comprehensive schools was introduced as a subject per se or as a field of specialisation in which low-level employees might be trained :
Chronology :
1984-86 : Pilot introduction in 8 technical and vocational upper secondary schools.
1987-92 : Introduction in approximately 100 technical and vocational schools and all 25 comprehensive schools. 'Computer Science' is introduced in 1987 into the secondary education National Curriculum as separate school subject with the purpose of familiarising students with technology and computer applications.
1992-95 : Introduction to the remaining 150 technical and vocational schools and any new comprehensive school to be created (Doukides, 1992)
1996 : the Ministry of Education launched the project "Odysseia", (http://odysseia.cti.gr/ English/ODYSSEIANEW/about.htm) with the purpose of integrating ICT into school curricula. The aim of this project was to develop the necessary critical mass of school communities that would integrate technologies as an everyday tool, and in parallel, to provide valuable experience for further diffusion.
The Odysseia project implements its goals in three basic ways :
by providing training and support for teachers of all specialisations: during school hours and direct to the teaching staff, provided by ICT-trained teacher-facilitators,
by setting up the necessary infrastructure : fully equipped computer labs, and technical on-site support for the schools, and
by developing appropriate educational material: development of new software (50 educational software packages) and the adaptation of existing, international, exploratory and multidisciplinary educational software (17 packages).
The training of 5,500 teachers, who participated in the project, was undertaken by 125 ICT teacher-facilitators, selected from among the most accomplished of Greek teachers. They were trained at the post-graduate level, for one year, in three training centres overseen by three Universities.
2000-2004 : The "Information Society Operational Program 2000-2004" launched by the Ministry of Education consists of four main areas: infrastructure development; teacher training; educational content development; and education administration. In the first area, computer labs are established in primary, secondary, higher and special education. Additionally, network infrastructure is being provided for the school and academic network, while at least one tele-education room is being established in each academic institution. Finally, information centres are being developed in every public library.
In the second area, training is being given to 76.000 (63% of total) primary and secondary school teachers in ICT use and exploitation in teaching and learning (the other 51.000 teachers represent the 37% already trained).
In the third area, a technical support structure is being established in primary and secondary schools. Additionally, eight more educational software packages are being localised in Greek, seven more Greek educational packages and 50 packages of educational activities are being developed. Moreover, three educational portals are being developed: one for educational matters and resources; one for the Greek language; and one for youth, while telematic services are being developed for the school and academic networks. Finally, library resources are being digitised. http://en.infosoc.gr - source : kee.gr.
